CF Delegation Meet MEPs

Brussels -- Tuesday 5 June, 2012

A delegation of 11 senior Conservative Future members visited the European Parliament this week. I was delighted to be able to sponsor the trip, the first ever to Brussels by a CF group. It is part of the ongoing effort to forge deeper links between the European Conservatives and Reformist (ECR) Group and young Conservatives in Yorkshire and The Humber.

On Monday I welcomed them and spoke and answered questions about my work here and at home. I outlined my duties as Spokesman on Justice and Home Affairs issues and Vice-Chair of the Special Committee on Organised Crime, and furthermore I highlighted the main issues on which I work in the constituency.

During the two-day visit the delegation also met the Leader of the Conservatives in the European Parliament, Richard Ashworth MEP, who gave them an insight into the economical and political pressures being faced in Europe at the moment.

The group also took in a visit of the Parliament Plenary Chamber and witnessed first hand the practical implications of work which spans 27 Member States and operates in 23 different languages. Later they visited the Parliamentarium where they enjoyed an interactive presentation of how democracy has developed in Europe since the end of the second World War.

Can I thank the group for the interest they showed and particularly pass on my gratitude to Spencer Pitfield who lead the delegation.
