Oral Question On European Arrest Warrant
Strasbourg -- 6 June 2011
Timothy asked an Oral Question (OQ) on the European Arrest Warrant (EAW) on Tuesday in Strasbourg. Whilst the European Arrest arrant can be a useful tool in the fight against cross-border crime, organised crime and terrorism, there is potential for its reputation and effectiveness to be undermined by reports of it not being used in a proportionate manner. Timothy wants the Council to answer the following questions:
– Does the Council consider the EAW to have been a useful instrument and to have attained its objectives?
– What steps does the Council intend to take to guarantee that the future use of the European Arrest Warrant is proportionate in the offence committed and in financial cost?
- How does the Council intend to guarantee the legal and administrative rights of those sought under a European Arrest Warrant?
We will update you on any answers we receive. In the meantime, if you have any feedback on the European Arrest Warrant or have bee personally affected by it, you can contact Timothy at timothy.kirkhope@europarl.europa.eu
