Timothy Supports Written Declaration On Lorries

Brussels, 7th February 2011

I am urging colleagues to sign Written Declaration 81 which could help save hundreds of lives in the future. Many letters and emails from my Yorkshire constituents have flooded in, telling my how they or their loved ones have been affected by accidents on the road involving lorry drivers who are quite simply unaware of other road users because of so called "blind spots".

This is the email I have sent to my fellow MEPs:

Dear Colleagues,

I would like to urge you to sign Written Declaration 81 which has been proposed by Fiona Hall MEP. It calls for renewed debate on how to improve the safety of heavy goods vehicles. It lapses in just a few weeks and I am writing to ask you, my colleagues in the ECR Group, to help ensure this Declaration is passed.

This Written Declaration aims to address the problem of drivers of Heavy Goods Vehicles not being able to see cyclists properly because of “blind spots” to the front and sides of their vehicles. As a result of these "blind spots" around 2000 cyclists die on roads in the EU each year.

  • For those of us who believe cycling is a healthy form of recreation and an excellent mobility tool - please sign.
  • For those who support the development of new, innovative, practical and affordable safety technologies - please sign.
  • For those who would like to help end unnecessary injuries and deaths on roads across Europe - please sign.

Kind regards,

Timothy KIRKHOPE MEP
