NO TO VAT ON POSTAGE STAMPS
Tuesday 2nd December 2003
The European Parliament's Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee voted this morning to reject European Commission proposals to add VAT to all supplies of postal services, including stamps.
Timothy Kirkhope, MEP for Yorkshire and the Humber, said:
"Putting VAT on stamps would have been an unwanted extra cost at Christmas. This is an important victory. If we can repeat today's result when the full session of the European Parliament votes on this, we will have saved people from having to pay more for their stamps. Christmas is expensive enough without having to pay VAT on Christmas card postage. With sixty tax rises from Gordon Brown, we don't need more from the European Commission."
