NO TO VAT ON POSTAGE STAMPS
Monday 15th December 2003
The price of postage stamps could increase following a vote in the European Parliament tomorrow. The European Commission is proposing to add VAT to all supplies of postal services, including stamps.
Timothy Kirkhope, Conservative MEP for Yorkshire and the Humber, said:
"Adopting this directive would be especially hard on the elderly and on business. Keeping the price of stamps down is crucial, particularly in the run-up to Christmas.
If the report is accepted, then UK residents will have to pay yet another tax rise under Labour. I hope that MEPs will vote to reject the Commission's proposals to put VAT on stamps. Christmas is expensive enough without having to pay VAT on Christmas card postage."
