BIO-TERROR THREATS MUST BE TACKLED ACROSS EUROPE

Tuesday 9th February 2004

Moves to enhance European co-operation in the fight against biological and chemical terrorism have been supported in the European Parliament today.

The report recommends that national police forces, Europol and intelligence services should co-operate to commission a realistic analysis of the threat posed by chemical and biological weapons. In light of this, legislative steps to deal with biological and chemical weapons attacks should be taken.

Timothy Kirkhope MEP, Conservative Spokesman on Justice and Home Affairs in the European Parliament, said:

"Terrorism, particularly biological and chemical terrorism, is more than just a national issue and has to be addressed sensitively by nation states in co-operation with one another. Biological and chemical weapons are serious threats that we all face, and alongside the work done by national Governments, the EU must take all measures necessary to ensure people's safety.

There are worrying indications that too little has been done so far to protect the citizens of Europe and in particular the UK."
