Blair Trying to be All Things to All Men

Thursday 23 June 2005

Tony Blair's speech to the European Parliament today shows his desire to be "all things to all men" but Conservatives will judge him on results not rhetoric, Timothy Kirkhope MEP, leader of the Conservatives in the European Parliament, said today.

Reacting to the Prime Minister's speech in Brussels, Mr Kirkhope said:

"Tony Blair is talking about the Constitution as if it is a viable option for Europe's future. If he really is serious about a different kind of European Union then he must declare the Constitution dead.

"The Prime Minister is apparently coming round to the view of a deregulated, competitive Europe that British Conservatives have long been calling for.

"He is trying to be all things to all men. We will judge Mr Blair on results not rhetoric."
