Austrian Plan to Revive Constitution is a Waste of Time
Monday 9 January 2006
Austria 's plan to revive the European constitution during its six-month presidency of the EU shows contempt for democratic opinion and is likely to further alienate the EU from citizens, Conservative leader in Europe Timothy Kirkhope MEP said today.
Mr Kirkhope said:
" Europe's leaders appear not to see the irony of urging the EU to reconnect with its citizens while in the same breath calling for the constitution to be revived.
"Tony Blair could have killed off the constitution during the British presidency. Instead he chose to ignore the issue entirely. That has just made matters worse.
"The constitution is a non-starter. We are deluding ourselves if we think otherwise. All this talk of resuscitating it is a huge waste of effort, time and money."
