Environmental Detail in Terminal 5 Project 'Impressive'

Brussels, 25 July 2007 -- Timothy Kirkhope MEP, Leader of the Conservatives in the European Parliament and Transport Spokesman, has spoken of his impressions of Heathrow's new Terminal 5, employing thousands of contractors and set to open next year.

Following a site visit and discussions on security, environmental concerns and new technologies this week, he said he was 'very impressed' with the progress being made.

"Despite the enormity of the project, I was impressed by the concern for environmental detail, including the diversion of two rivers with full ecological regeneration. Obviously issues like security remain of great importance and the convenience of the travelling public has to be taken into account, which I believe has been achieved successfully.

"I am hopeful that before too long there will be internationally agreed rules on hand luggage and items that may be taken on board planes. I am also keen to see new technology implemented, which will assist in making the traveller's lot a happier one.

"I was fortunate to have a meeting with Willie Walsh, Chief Executive of British Airways. We discussed a number of issues which will be coming before the European Parliament and it is extremely useful to have the views of the leader of one of the EU's leading airlines."
