Climate Change Tops Agenda in Australia Talks

Wednesday, April 9th 2008

Brussels -- Last month Timothy was appointed Chairman of the European Parliament's Australia and New Zealand Delegation. The Parliament has delegations for every nation outside the EU, the aim being to forge and strengthen international relationships. Regular interparliamentary meetings (IPMs) have been taking place both in Europe and in Australia and New Zealand since 1981.

This week Timothy hosted the 31st EP/Australia interparliamentary meeting. Seven Australian politicians came to the European Parliament to participate in a series of formal and informal discussions. The key topics discussed were global warming and climate change, trade reform and EU institutional reform. The visit helped to cement the already excellent relationship between the European and Australian Parliaments.

Timothy said:

"I was very pleased to welcome our Australian colleagues to the European Parliament and found our joint discussions very productive. The EU and Australia enjoy a good relationship and I am pleased to be able to perpetuate this in my role as Chairman."
